New low-budget horror film Hostel has dislodged The Chronicles of Narnia from the top of the US box office charts.

The story of three young backpackers who fall prey to a torture ring took an estimated £11.35m in its first three days.

The Chronicles of Narnia dropped to number two, with King Kong also slipping to third place, with takings of only £7m.

Hostel has been described as "graphic and deeply disturbing," and is said to have been inspired by true events. The film centres around three male backpackers who are lured into a chamber by two eastern European women. They become victims of a torture ring who carry out depraved acts on the men.
