The film, which is to be produced by Lord of the Rings creator Peter Jackson, has been delayed due to a dispute over pay between Jackson and local actors' unions in New Zealand.
Reuters now reports that Warner Bros, New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are approaching a deal to start production on the movie early next year.
The studios are believed to be planning to release the first film in late 2012 and the second instalment in December 2013.
