The Watchmen filmmaker was recently revealed to be on a shortlist of potential Superman directors that included Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler), Duncan Jones (Moon), Ben Affleck (The Town) and Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).
Speaking to Deadline about his appointment on the Warner Bros comic book film, Snyder said: "I've been a big fan of the character for a long time, he's definitely the king of all superheroes, he's the one.
"It's early yet, but I can tell you that what David (Goyer, screenwriter) and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I've always felt he was kind of awesome."
Snyder added that he will complete work on upcoming Warner Bros fantasy epic Sucker Punch before starting on the next Man of Steel picture.
His directing credits also include the Dawn Of The Dead remake and 300.
