The Michael Clayton helmer was previously hired to write the script for the film in June but has now been secured by Universal Pictures to direct the project as well, reports Deadline.
It has yet to be confirmed whether franchise star Matt Damon will return after previous director Paul Greengrass exited to work with the actor on another movie titled Green Zone.
Frank Marshall, along with Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith of Captivate Entertainment, will produce The Bourne Legacy.
The picture was originally due to hit theatres in 2011 but is currently without a scheduled release date.
