The movie, Bigelow's follow-up to The Hurt Locker, is set in the border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, a region that is difficult to police and a target for the criminal underworld.
Hanks is said to be eyeing one of the five lead roles in the drama. Will Smith, Sean Penn, Javier Bardem, Christian Bale and Denzel Washington have all held talks about starring in the ensemble cast.
Triple Frontier will see Bigelow re-team with her Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal.
