The movie rights to the Broadway show, which tells the story of how Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi became pop superstars, were being chased by several different studios and filmmakers.
Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox were all keen to produce a big screen adaptation before King snapped up the rights for a seven-figure sum. King's ties to Martin Scorsese, who is admired by lead singer Valli, reportedly helped him close the deal.
"We are extremely excited about the passion and commitment expressed by GK Films to take Jersey Boys to another level," said Valli and Gaudio. "Graham King has been a believer from day one. We are in good hands."
King called the stage show - which features songs 'Big Girls Don't Cry', 'Oh What A Night' and 'Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You' - an "electrifying" experience and said it "has all the ingredients to become a big commercial hit movie".
