The Ang Lee-directed gay love story racked up awards for best screenplay, best original song, and best director before winning the best drama motion picture at the evening's climax.
"I think this has been an amazing year for American cinema," said Ang Lee when he stepped on stage to accept the award for best director, to rapturous applause from the celebrity audience. "So I just want to give my first thanks to my fellow filmmakers for strengthening my faith in movies."
The film's strong performance - winning four out of the seven categories it was nominated in - puts it in a very strong position for the Oscars later this year.
