According to Vulture, Paramount is putting together a sequel to the 1986 blockbuster and has already made offers to original director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to come back for the follow-up.
Cruise has allegedly informed the studio that he will play Maverick in a smaller part as long as the role isn't too "obvious".
The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who also penned Cruise's Valkyrie and the upcoming Wolverine sequel, is being sought to write the script.
The original Top Gun grossed $353 million at the worldwide box office and supposedly prompted a 500% increase in the number of men enlisting to be US Navy aviators.
