Organisers of the Tropfest Short Film Festival for 2011 said that they hope the move will make it easier for budding filmmakers outside Australia to enter the international competition.
According to the Herald Sun, they are also offering to fly any overseas finalists to Sydney to attend the event in February next year.
Founder and director John Polson said: "Hopefully the opportunity to come to Australia on us and have your short film screened in front of hundreds of thousands of people around the nation at the many live outdoor events and on the Movie Extra channel is the right sort of motivation."
Stars such as Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Toni Collette, Russell Crowe and Samuel L Jackson have previously taken on the roles of judges at the festival.
