The Matrix creators have reportedly begun casting roles in the film, which is set in different time periods and places throughout the story.
According to Total Film, James McAvoy is in talks to play Adam Ewing, an American lawyer, while the role of Dr Henry Goose has been "offered" to Tom Hanks.
Other stars linked to the film include Sir Ian McKellen, Natalie Portman and Halle Berry.
Production on the picture is expected to begin next year. McAvoy is currently shooting X-Men: First Class, due to be released June 3, 2011.
