According to the New York Post, the actor - who was dropped by his Hollywood agent following accusations of domestic abuse against his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva - is to appear as a tattoo artist in the Thailand-set sequel.
"It's a done deal. Mel will make a cameo as a tattoo artist," a source claimed. "Filming is taking place on the Warner Bros lot, where a Bangkok set has been built, and Mel is expected to film his role in two weeks. Then the production moves to Thailand at the end of October."
Original Hangover cast members Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha and Ken Jeong will return for the sequel, which is due to open in cinemas next July.
It was recently reported that Heather Graham's stripper character Jade will not be back for the follow-up.
Gibson's movie The Beaver, filmed before the domestic abuse allegations surfaced, is still awaiting a cinema release.
