The Oscar nominee told Vogue that she was initially concerned with the melodramatic nature of a movie centred around a young woman's battle with Parkinson's disease, but she was ultimately impressed with writer-director Edward Zwick's ability to create a sense of realism.
"I tried not to like the script as much as I did, because it scared me," she said.
The actress continued: "What if it becomes a melodrama? What if the audience doesn't find these challenging characters charming? There were so many things that could possibly go wrong with it."
Hathaway added that she so enjoyed the film's script that she did not object to stripping off on camera because it seemed natural for her character.
She explained: "These are people who have no trouble taking their clothes off - in a way, their bodies are their currency… But they're terrified of exposing their vulnerability, of becoming emotionally naked."
Love and Other Drugs is released on November 24 in US cinemas.
