Raimi's Ghost House company has teamed up with Mandate Pictures, which emerged with the screen rights to John Wyndham's 1951 novel after a heated bidding war, to make the movie.
Warner Bros was reportedly chasing the project for Harry Potter's David Yates to direct, but Mandate won the auction with a seven-figure bid.
The original 1962 Triffids movie was reportedly one of Raimi's favourites growing up. The book has been adapted twice on TV, first in 1981and again last Christmas with Dougray Scott and Joely Richardson leading the cast of a BBC production.
Day Of The Triffids centres on plant-like alien creatures invading Earth after blinding most of the world's population.
