The award for best picture was given to producers Diana Ossana and James Schamus at a recent ceremony. The Guild is known for regularly picking out the film that will win best picture Oscar, having managed it 11 out of 16 times since its inception.
The film, which centres around the emotional love story of two Wyoming sheep herders in the 1960s, has already won four Golden Globe awards, including best picture. However, lead actor Heath Ledger, who plays sheep herder Ennis Del Mar opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, lost out on the best dramatic actor award to Philip Seymour Hoffman for his role in Capote.
The Oscars will be held on 5 March, with nominations announced on 31 January.
