Sylvester McCoy has confirmed that he has been offered a role in Peter Jackson's two-part adaptation of The Hobbit.

The former Doctor Who star, who previously said that he was in negotiations for the fantasy epic, revealed at Auckland's Armageddon Expo that he will play wizard Radagast the Brown in the Lord Of The Rings prequels.

Radagast, a character who was left out of the Rings movie trilogy, appears in J.R.R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.

The first casting announcements for The Hobbit were made last week. Martin Freeman will play Bilbo Baggins, British TV stars Richard Armitage, Rob Kazinsky and Aidan Turner will all play dwarves, while ex-Time Lord David Tennant, James Nesbitt, Stephen Fry, Bill Nighy and Saoirse Ronan are also thought to be in the running for roles.
