The 17-year-old student from Delhi, India won the part of Piscine Molitor 'Pi' Patel after Lee looked at more than 3,000 auditions for the coveted role.
The movie, which Lee will shoot in 3D in Taiwan and India early next year, is based on Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize-winning novel. Finding Neverland's David Magee penned the screenplay.
Lee last year told DS of the long-in-development project: "A little boy adrift at sea with a tiger. It's a hard one to crack."
The Life Of Pi will open in cinemas on December 14, 2012.
