The True Blood star announced at a press conference for his current film Red Hill that he is to play the convicted criminal in director Brad Anderson's The Family.
The picture is believed to focus primarily on Manson's years as the leader of his murderous cult, rather than depicting his entire life story.
Manson is currently serving a life prison sentence for seven counts of murder and one count of conspiracy to murder which date back to late 1960s.
The killer has already been the subject of a 2003 horror called The Manson Family.
