Mark Ruffalo has revealed his approach to playing the Hulk in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble The Avengers.
The Kids Are All Right star told Digital Spy that he hopes to make Bruce Banner a more "charming, accessible" character than the previous incarnations.
"We want him to be an everyman, not so dour. A little more charming or accessible," Ruffalo said. "We're still sort of working it out with the script. I'm not exactly sure what it'll end up being but we've talked quite a bit about the Bill Bixby version of the Hulk."
Ruffalo said that the movie's tone will be in line with Whedon's previous work, adding that Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. was one of the key reasons he signed up for the project.
"I have a feeling there'll be a little nudge, nudge, wink, wink," he commented. "I think Robert sort of reinvented that genre in a way and I talked to him quite a bit before I took the part, how it works and how to do it. He said, 'C'mon we'll have fun, we'll work it out.' I trust him a lot so I think we'll have a good time playing with it."
