Empire reports the title as being Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol following a press conference for the film in Dubai.
The conference saw Tom Cruise appear alongside new co-stars Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner for the announcement.
"I've never done sequels to films and I never thought of these films as sequels," Cruise said of the new style of title. "Paramount has done a great job in coming up with a title, so it's not going to be MI2, 3, 4: it's going to be Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."
The movie will be scripted by Mission: Impossible 3 director J.J. Abrams and helmed by The Incredibles director Brad Bird.
As well as starring in the film, Cruise is also co-producing alongside Abrams and Paula Wagner.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is due to be released in cinemas on December 16, 2011.
