Speaking to MTV News, the filmmaker stated that winning an Oscar for Best Picture for Slumdog Millionaire allowed him to get the story of mountain climber Aron Ralston to the big screen quicker.
"We obviously had a short, small window in which to strike, when people really believe in you for all sorts of reasons," he said. "We used it to try and make this film, obviously."
Boyle further suggested that 127 Hours provided him with a chance to make an action film that doesn't conform to the conventional trappings of the genre.
He explained: "It was an amazing challenge. I'd always wanted to make it. I've always been fascinated by the idea of trapping someone. In a medium that's all about movement and change, constant vibration of images, I thought it would be wonderful to challenge that and see if we could make an action movie where the hero doesn't move."
The director also recently promised that the movie will be a euphoric experience for audiences.
127 Hours is released on November 5 in US cinemas.
