Bloody Disgusting claims that Renner is in close talks for the role of protagonist Snake Plissken, played in the original by Kurt Russell.
The Crazies director Breck Eisner will direct the remake, based on the 1981 classic by John Carpenter.
Gerard Butler had previously been rumoured for the role of Plissken.
Renner is best known for his role in The Hurt Locker, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and will next star in superhero team-up film The Avengers and the next entry in the Mission: Impossible series.
