Scott, who is thought to be in talks to return to direct the sequel, claimed that there is a possibility that Cruise will once again portray Maverick.
"We've been talking with Tom definitely," Scott confirmed via Entertainment Weekly.
This news comes only a week after Vulture claimed that an email from the film's screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie had said, "There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role".
Despite these indicators that Cruise is being lined up for a Top Gun return, a representative for the actor has vehemently denied that he will have any involvement with the sequel.
