The Hollywood Reporter claims that Johansson is in the midst of final negotiations to appear alongside Matt Damon in We Bought a Zoo.
Based on the memoirs of writer Benjamin Mee, the film follows its lead character after he uses his life savings to buy a deserted zoo and repopulate it with a number of endangered species.
Damon signed on for the role earlier this year, as did Spider-Man 3 star Thomas Haden Church.
It will be Crowe's first film since the poorly-received Elizabethtown in 2005.
We Bought A Zoo is due to be released on December 23, 2011.
