The film's plot focused on a group of young backpackers who become lost in the outback and encounter serial killer Mick Taylor, played by John Jarratt.
"I can confirm we are working on a sequel to Wolf Creek," McLean revealed to Bloody Disgusting. "It's been on the drawing board for a few years now and we've finally cracked a killer script.
"[We're focusing on] capturing the realism behind these kind of horrific events and crimes that have actually taken place in the Outback," he added.
The original film was notable for being marketed as "based on true events", and McLean's sequel will follow a similar tone.
The director also confirmed that John Jarratt would be back to reprise his role as the film's killer when production begins next year.
