The British production company, which backed films such as Four Wedding And A Funeral, Shaun Of The Dead and Atonement, has hired author Jay Basu to write the script for the proposed movie, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The latest screen incarnation of the Arthurian legend, BBC's Merlin, is currently broadcasting its third series.
Actors including Sam Neill, Malcolm McDowell and Ron Moody have previously played the wizard on TV and film.
