The writers of the original screenplay are disputing the credits, which list superstar screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof as the writers alongside Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who penned the graphic novel of the same name, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The Universal and Dreamworks film has been in production since 1997, and it was not until 2006 that a graphic novel based on the original script was published. Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof were brought in to work on later versions of the script.
The earlier writers are reportedly demanding to be credited on the project. Eight writers and writing teams have worked on the script since the project began.
Cowboys & Aliens will star Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. It is scheduled for release in summer 2011.
