New York Magazine reports that Mulligan has made it to the top of the list of potential actresses looking to play the part, which also includes Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall.
Moulin Rouge helmer Baz Lurhmann is directing the project, based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The project is scheduled to begin shooting in the summer of 2011 for a 2012 release.
