Brooklyn's Finest director Antoine Fuqua has also entered negotiations to board the project, which is based on the comic book from Canadian publisher Red 5.
The movie takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth that has been destroyed by a solar flare. Butler will lead a group of treasure hunters who return to the scorched planet to capture valued items such as the Mona Lisa and the Crown Jewels.
A Man Apart writer Christian Gudegast will rework the script, while Tobey Maguire and Neal Moritz are attached as producers.
