The Inception actor's Appian Way company has snapped up the film rights to Lamar Waldron and Thom Hartmann's book Legacy Of Secrecy: The Long Shadow Of The JFK Assassination, says Variety.
It suggests that Mafia godfather Carlos Marcello ordered the killing of JFK in Dallas, TX in 1963. FBI informant Jack Van Laningham allegedly became a confidant of Marcello and heard his confession during his extended undercover investigation.
Marcello was not named in the Warren Report, President Lyndon B. Johnson's official investigation into the killing, but the 1979 House Select Committee on Assassinations asserted that mobster Santo Trafficante and Marcello "had the motive, means and opportunity to assassinate President Kennedy".
DiCaprio will take on the role of Van Laningham in the movie and produce alongside his father George DiCaprio.
Warner Bros is planning to release Legacy Of Secrecy in 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination.
