The seventh Harry Potter film has topped the US box office charts and has claimed the most successful opening weekend of the film franchise so far.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 took $125.1 million this weekend, ahead of the previous series record of $106.2 million taken by Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire in 2005.

The film's success also gives it sixth place on the all-time opening weekend list, behind the likes of The Dark Knight, Twilight: New Moon and Iron Man 2.

Megamind falls to second place, followed by the new Tony Scott film Unstoppable.

Robert Downey Jr and Zach Galifianakis's road trip comedy Due Date moves down to fourth place.

Rounding out the top five is Russell Crowe's latest release The Next Three Days, which has received mixed reviews from critics.
