The Buffy reboot was announced back in May 2009, but it had yet to find a studio. The project will not involve Joss Whedon, who wrote the screenplay for the 1992 movie and created the 1997 TV series. When the update was first revealed, Whedon stated that the project would fare better without his participation.
"I think that's something better left untouched by me. So, I wish them luck," he said.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer tells the story of a teenage girl who discovers that her calling is to defend the world from vampires and other demons. Kristy Swanson played Buffy in the original movie, while Sarah Michelle Gellar portrayed the vampire slayer in the TV series.
According to the Los Angeles Times, actress Whit Anderson (Yes Man) will be writing the new movie's screenplay.
"I didn't really watch much television at all, but I always watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That was the one show I would watch when I got home," Anderson said.
She added: "I just loved this character. I was the same age as Buffy, and it was so rare to have a female lead character on TV in those days who was strong and capable and smart but also allowed to be feminine."
