According to Deadline, Carell is teaming up with fellow former Second City comedy troupe member David Steinberg for the project.
The doc would chronicle the evolution of comedy, going back to the 1950s, reports Deadline.
The film will feature many famous comedians, including Carol Burnett, Mel Brooks, Lily Tomlin, Don Rickles, Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Tina Fey and Robin Williams.
Chris Rock, Judd Apatow, Jane Lynch and Sarah Silverman are also attached to appear in the film.
"We're honoured that so many legendary comedic performers have chosen to be part of this," said Carell.
The Office star, who is leaving the show after the current season, is also writing a new workplace comedy for NBC.
