In an interview with the Daily Mail, the actress explained that she tried to sway her co-stars from using foul language during production of the drama.
"I set up a swear jar and asked Jeff [Bridges], Matt [Damon], Josh [Brolin] - and all the other actors and crew - to put in $5 (£3.17) if they uttered the F-word and a dollar for the rest," she said.
The star continued: "We raised $300 (£189) for charity."
Steinfeld added that she also used the jar to improve her own vocabulary.
She explained: "Every time I said, like, 'like', I had to pay a dollar [too]."
True Grit is released on December 22 in US cinemas and on January 14 in the UK.
