The film - written by Joel and Ethan Coen and to be directed by The Last Station's Michael Hoffman - will see Firth take on the role of a cat burglar who tries to steal a priceless statue from a billionaire.
To aid him with the robbery, the criminal enlists the help of a waitress who resembles the victim's dead wife.
The original film starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine in the lead roles.
Gambit is due to start shooting in London and Texas next year.
