Wife role completely cut from 'Syriana'

The role of George Clooney's wife in Syriana was completely cut after filming, it has been revealed.

Actress Greta Scacchi was "mortified" when she was told none of her scenes would feature in the movie. The 44-year-old's last big role was in 1992 movie The Player and she had hopes for a revitalised career.

Her work was scrapped after bosses at Warner Bros studios said an original three-hour version was too long. Director Stephen Gaghan and executive producer Clooney had to entirely remove Scacchi's role.

The Italian actress reportedly considered legal action but withdrew when her full salary was paid.

"She was mortified at the news," a production insider told the Mail on Sunday. "This was a class movie which was why she attached her name to it - she was desperate to make an impact. It's always been tough for glamour-girl actresses once they pass 40."

"Amanda Peet's scenes stayed but Greta didn't have a single shot left," he continued. "She is so upset that people she regarded as friends didn't fight her corner."

The actress's agent Nicki van Gelder said Scacchi will still benefit from the film . "She was phoned by the director, who told her they were going to have to cut the entire storyline. He found it very difficult," he explained. "She was certainly disappointed because she loved doing the film but she would hate to be described as furious. They have told her there will be quite a lot of her in the DVD version."
