According to NY Mag, the director - who helmed the previous two installations of the famous franchise - informed Marvel Studios this week that he would not return for the next film.
No reason was given for the decision, but sources told the publication that Favreau was "frustrated" with the studio's desire to include more characters from other comics into the next project.
He also spoke to MTV News last month, admitting that he was unsure what Iron Man 3 would be about.
"In theory, Iron Man 3 is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers," he said.
"This whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys."
