The Guardian reports that the film, as of yet untitled, is a biopic based on the life of French poet and dramatist Alfred de Musset.
Speaking of the role, Doherty said: "The story is a love triangle, so it's pretty intense and romantic. I don't know if I'm a good actor, but they say I am."
The Babyshambles frontman is to star opposite The Science of Sleep star Charlotte Gainsbourg. It is not known if he has been given the lead role.
De Musset's death was linked to his alcoholism, an addiction that Doherty has previously battled.
