'Eight Below' above 'Date Movie' in US

Eight Below topped the US box office chart last weekend, beating fellow newcomers Date Movie and Freedomland to the number one position.

Based on a true story, Eight Below tells the survival tale of a group of sled-dogs whose owners are forced to leave them to fend for themselves. The movie opened to $25.0m over the three day period, followed by Date Movie with $22.3m.

Meanwhile, the week's other major new release, novel adaptation Freedomland, only made it to seventh place, grossing just $7.0m.
