Brown, who is also the author of the best-selling novels The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, published The Lost Symbol in 2009. The novel sold more than a million copies on its first day.
In The Lost Symbol, Robert Langdon, the protagonist of both The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, faces off against the Freemasons in Washington DC.
According to the The Hollywood Reporter, this is the first time that Brown has adapted one of his own novels. Akiva Goldsman wrote The Da Vinci Code and co-wrote its big screen follow-up Angels and Demons with David Koepp.
As of yet, there is no news on whether Tom Hanks will return as Langdon, after playing the character in the past two films.
The Lost Symbol is expected to hit theatres in 2013.
