The big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games will begin its search for the lead role of Katniss Everdeen early next year.
Producer Nina Jacobson spoke to the Los Angeles Times about the highly-anticipated film, saying that there are no candidates as of yet.
"We'll start auditioning fairly early in the New Year," said Jacobson. "There are no front-runners yet."
Hailed as the next Twilight, The Hunger Games is the first novel in a trilogy set in a futuristic world where the government forces children to fight each other to the death on live television. Katniss is a 16-year-old girl that takes her younger sister's place in the games in order to save her life.
Jacobson said of Katniss: "She's much more of a soldier drafted to duty than she is a character who has a great hunger for violence. She's forced into it and so are the other kids in the games."
Jacobson continued: "She has so much inner strength, but she's a reluctant heroine."
The Hunger Games is expected to open in theatres in 2013.
