Stone and LaBeouf worked together on the recent Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
According to IGN, the director discussed Pinkville with LaBeouf on the commentary track to Wall Street.
The film, which would centre on the My Lai Massacre in 1968, was stalled in 2007 and then shelved after the Writers Guild of America strike.
Channing Tatum was apparently attached to star in the movie as helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, but Stone's comments have now inspired speculation that LaBeouf will take on the role once the project is revived.
