Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted that she found her Country Strong role to be "haunting".

In an interview with The Boston Herald, Paltrow explained she that was fascinated by the story of alcoholic country singer Kelly Canter.

"I couldn’t get it out of mind," she said.

The star added: "There was just something about it that I found really haunting and cool and beautiful."

Paltrow went on to say that she identified with director Shana Feste's drama about balancing love and celebrity because she was raised by two famous parents, director Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner.

She noted: "In my case, I think I was raised by people who were very focused on the importance of family. That that's where you get real richness in life - and that success is great, but it's kind of an illusion."

Gwyneth's father Bruce died in 2002 after a lengthy battle with oral cancer.

Country Strong opens January 7 in the US and on March 25 in the UK.
