'Monsters' helmer Edwards to make 'Godzilla'
Published Wednesday, Jan 5 2011, 09:56 GMT | By Simon Reynolds

British filmmaker Edwards will team up with a new screenwriter to redraft David Callaham's original script. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures, who secured the Godzilla rights from Japanese firm Toho Co in March 2010, will co-produce and co-finance the blockbuster.
The iconic screen monster first appeared in 1954's Godzilla and has since starred in more than 20 films. Independence Day director Roland Emmerich mounted a big budget Hollywood version in 1998, but the movie opened to bad reviews and no sequel was made.
Edwards is also working on an untitled science fiction project with Wanted's Timur Bekmambetov.
