Speaking to Digital Spy, Boyle revealed that doctors informed him how dehydration causes human brains to "come apart like a Rubik's cube".
"I did love the hallucinations in it," the Slumdog Millionaire director said. "It is really interesting, dehydration. He measured his water as carefully as he could but he ran out of it after a couple of days. When you run out of water and you dehydrate your brain comes apart like a Rubik's cube. It's unbelievable what happens to you.
"We took a lot of medical advice. [It's] intense. You don't need to take drugs - the brain literally starts to come apart and all sorts of things pop in there, including Scooby Doo. I love doing all that. I love cinema and taking you places like that."
127 Hours is showing in UK and US cinemas now.
