Deadline claims that The Bourne Ultimatum actor Edgar Ramirez is now close to signing a deal for the role, to star as the God of War opposite the returning Sam Worthington.
Ramirez's previous film credits include parts in Ché and Vantage Point, as well as a lead role in the television miniseries Carlos, for which he received widespread critical acclaim.
Ares was originally played by Tamer Hassan in the 2010 film, and there has yet to be an announcement as to why the role is being recast for the sequel.
Wrath Of The Titans is due to begin filming this summer.
