The Tamara Drewe star is competing for the gong with other nominees Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone.
Arterton told Metro: "It's just nice to been taken seriously... [and] not seen as just a sex symbol.
"This award is great because it's not about one particular role, it's about a body of work. I am proud that is being recognised."
She added: "I am really excited. I am quite amazed actually. I can't really believe it. I'm an old timer.
"I suppose for the rising star award you need a little bit of work behind you for them to celebrate - so people of note will know you. Last year I had four movies out but I have been around for three years."
