The South Korean filmmaker, whose works include the critically acclaimed Oldboy and Thirst, used two iPhone 4s and footage from crewmembers' smartphones to make the surreal horror-comedy Night Fishing.
The story, written by Park Chan-wook and his brother Park Chan-kyong, follows a fisherman who catches a woman in his net, passes out then awakens to find that the pair have swapped clothes.
Discussing the process of making a film on the Apple device, Park Chan-wook told the Yonhap News Agency: "It was a new experience, compared with making a meticulously planned movie. Even a casual and spontaneous shot delivered a surprise. It felt like there were more choices."
Park Chan-kyong added of the $133,000 iPhone short: "Every device has pros and cons so we tried to work with the device's characteristics. We wanted the scene to feel dynamic so we took advantage of the camera's spontaneity and its sense of movement."
Night Fishing will be released in nine Korean cinemas on January 27.
