The Sons of Anarchy actor, who has portrayed the comic book demon in both films, insisted that he "owed" Guillermo del Toro for backing him for the role.
"Hellboy one not quite as much as Hellboy II - but by doing that second one and becoming a bonafide big studio franchise, there’s just been a huge difference to my life prior to that and my life after that," he said. "I owe it all to Guillermo. He fought for a long time to win me that role. You can never imagine the battle he had to put up. He invested a great deal of his own personal stock."
He continued: "I've been very busy since Hellboy II and I wasn't all that busy prior to. I was chugging along pretty good and not bad - respectable. But now it's just easier to stay busy than it's ever been before."
Sons of Anarchy returns on Wednesday January 19 at 10pm on Five USA.
