The filmmaker told website We Got This Covered that he has put aside his long-planned thriller Mute to make the new untitled feature.
"My next film probably won't be Mute. Right now things are very exciting and are falling in place really well, but not for Mute," he said. "It's for a different project that I’ve written and that no-one knows anything about."
Jones, who admitted that he initially discussed working with his Source Code star Jake Gyllenhaal on Mute, added that the new production will "address what people expect from sci-fi films but [it] still does what I want it to do, and still has the heart and energy that I’d want to see in a sci-fi film".
The director described the venture as a "future city film" with similarities to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner.
"The one thing I can tell you about my next project is that I’m determined to do a future city film, I want it to be my homage to Blade Runner, even if it’s a bit bigger, it will be a city-based future film," he explained.
Jones's Source Code will premiere as the opening night film of the SXSW festival on March 11.
