The former Ugly Betty star has been appointed to the US Dramatic panel alongside two directors, Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry) and Jason Reitman (Juno), cinematographer Tim Orr (Observe and Report) and film critic Todd McCarthy. Ferrera's first feature film, Real Women Have Curves, won two prizes at Sundance in 2002.
The festival, which takes place between January 20 and 30 in Utah, is the largest independent film festival in the US and has a reputation for giving new filmmakers their big break. Previous Sundance award winners include Secretary, Precious and An Education.
Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons, has also been appointed to the US Documentary jury.
The Grateful Dead's Bob Weir is due to open the festival with a solo performance.
